Kali ini saya dan beberapa orang teman SD-SMP Santa Maria Surabaya mengadakan reuni di Bon Ami, chain resto yang sudah populer dari jaman saya masih balita. Kebetulan ada beberapa teman yang dari luar negeri yang sudah lama nyidam masakan Indonesia. Di Bon Ami ini lebih banyak pilihan masakan Indonesianya dibanding sister restaurantnya, Bon Cafe.
Dekor resto ini cukup unik, bernuansa kolonial belanda dan menggunakan kanopi yang menarik.

Last week I had a wonderful reunion with my junior high school and elementary friends. Some of them resides overseas, so we choose a place that serves Indonesian cuisine. Aside being popular for their steak, Bon Ami also hava a big selection of Indonesian cuisine.
This one particular branch is in Jl. Kombes Pol M Duryat, it has a retro dutch colonial look, and I'm particularly fond of this kind of old building.
Bon Ami dan Bon Cafe terkenal akan steak ayamnya. Dahulu tahun 1990-an tidak banyak pilihan restaurant steak, yang saya ingat selain Boncafe ada pula Kafe Venesia (sekarang pom bensin), Chez Rose (sekarang dealer Ducatti) dan Angus House. Yang bertahan hanya Angus House dan juga cukup berkembang sembari membuka cabang baru di HR Muhamad.
Bon Ami and Bon Cafe are very famous for their steaks, back then we didn't have much choice of restaurant that serves steak, pretty much as I remember, aside from hotels, there are 3 famous steak house, Angus House, Venesia Cafe, Chez Rose, the last 2 didn't stand the test of time and have been closed for quite a while.

Favorit saya sendiri untuk steaknya adalah steak ayam, tapi dengan pesanan khusus, minta dada dan lemaknya dibuang. Untuk steak sapinya bukan favorit saya, karena pilihan daging dan potongannya tidak terlalu menarik, untuk sapi biasanya pilihan yang lebih saya sukai adalah Ox Tounge Steak atau steak Lidah Sapi nya.
Pilihan menu menarik lainnya adalah Chicken in Flaming Brandy yang dituangi brandy dan dinyalakan api untuk mengurangi alkohol dalam sausnya.
Saos steaknya unik, beda dengan steak pada umumnya yang rasa BBQ, di sini relatif lebih kuat rasa manisnya dibandingkan tangy savory ala kebanyakan steak house. Beda rasanya lumayan karena itu kadang saya merasa resep steak ini khas dan fusion, seperti masakan Baba Nyonya atau masakan peranakan.
As for me, I like their chicken steak, but I usually ask for breast meat, with the fat trimmed, because they usually serve unusual cut of steaks for western standards. The Beef tenderloin and sirloin are not my favorite due to it's texture and taste are kinda strange and usually tougher than the usual fare beef steaks. They also have a whole chicken steak dish, Chicken in Flaming Brandy, which is served lighten up in flames to cook off some of the alcohol.
Their steak sauce is very different from the usual fare. I think they are based with HP steak sauce, but made much sweeter with other ingredients, that makes a uniquely Indonesian taste. Might as well call it a Baba nyonya steak :D

Lontong Cap Go Mek, hidangan ini biasanya menjadi menu wajib untuk yang merayakan dan masih memegang tradisi Cina, dihidangkan 15 hari setelah imlek. Kalau saya sendiri tidak terlalu merayakan, tapi syukurnya ada saja yang mengirimkan lontong cap go mek ke rumah, jadi secara kebetulan juga ikut merayakan :D
This is Lontong Cap Go Mek, a Chinese Hokkien dish converted to Indonesian taste. For the household that celebrate chinese new year, this dish is usually served 15 days after the celebration.

Beberapa teman saya adalah vegetarian, di sini tidak sulit untuk bagi vegetarian untuk memilih makanan, berbeda dengan Boncafe yang kebanyakan menunya western, dan mengandung daging, di sini disediakan menu asia dan Indonesia yang variatif, dan bisa dimintakan untuk tanpa daging.
Few of my friends are vegetarian, and we don't have trouble finding a food to eat there. They're quite accommodating for the vegan diet.

Berikut adalah menu favorit saya, saat tidak sedang vegetarian, Bubur Ayam. Sayangnya pada kunjungan kali ini, bubur ayam di Bon Ami tidak seenak yang di Boncafe, kemungkinan besar karena bahannya kurang segar, ada bau yang sedikit aneh pada ayamnya.
This is what I ordered, the chicken porridge. Sad to say that the Bon Ami's porridge not as good as the Bon Cafe's. Though uncanny in appearance, it's whole different in taste. The Bon Cafe is much nicer and fresh, whilst the Bon Ami have a little unpleasant smell to it.

Selain makanan, di sini juga menyediakan roti dengan resep kuno, letak toko rotinya di samping resto, bisa dijangkau dengan mudah karena masih di dalam satu bangunan
Bon Ami is famous for it's bakery, so it's only natural that this eatery is joined with their bakery store. It's easily reachable, just next to the restaurant, under the same roof

Bon Cafe and Bon Ami originated from the same founder, though they have similar menu but they do differentiate in few ways, where Bon Cafe is a bit more western oriented and have a wide selection of coffee, Bon Ami is a bit more on the Baba Nyonya style, wider selection of Indonesian dishes and with it's retro looking building.
