Indigo is the restaurant in the famous Majapahit Hotel in Tunjungan street, Surabaya. This hotel is quite famous in Surabaya (and dutch?) history as the location of the "Battle of Surabaya"
Here are a few description of the hotel and historical event, taken from Wikipedia :
The Hotel Majapahit is a historic luxury hotel in Surabaya, Indonesia. Located at 65 Jalan Tunjungan, Surabaya. The hotel was founded in 1910 as Hotel Oranje by Lucas Martin Sarkies who commissioned Regent Alfred John Bidwell to design the hotel. The hotel opened on 1 July 1911..
A new art deco style lobby extension was opened in 1936. The opening was celebrated with a royal party attended by Crown Prince Leopold III from Belgium, Princess Astrid from Sweden and Charlie Chapman.
During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia the hotel name was changed to Yamato Hotel and initially was used as a temporary prison camp for Dutch women and children. The hotel was the site of the famous "Insiden Hotel Yamato" (in English "Hotel Yamato incident") on 19 September 1945 in which young Indonesian revolutionaries tore the blue part of the Dutch flag flown in the hotel to change it to the red and white Indonesian flag in the lead up to the Battle of Surabaya. Following this incident it became known as the Hotel Merdeka, or the Liberty Hotel.
In 1946 the Sarkies brothers returned to manage the hotel and changed the name to the Lucas Martin Sarkies Hotel. In 1969 Mantrust Holdings Co., became the new owner and named the hotel after the historic kingdom of Majapahit. It was operated by the Mandarin Oriental group between 1993 and 2006. The hotel was acquired by PT. Sekman Wisata in 2006.

By the time the Allied forces arrived at the end of October 1945, the pemuda ('youth') foothold in Surabaya City was described as "a strong unified fortress".[4] Ferocious fighting erupted when 6,000 Indian troops landed in the city to evacuate European internees. Following the killing on 30 October of the British commander, Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby,[4] the British retaliated with a punitive sweep that began on 10 November, under the cover of air attacks. Although the European forces largely captured the city in three days, the poorly armed Republicans fought for three weeks, and thousands died as the population fled to the countryside.
Despite the military defeat suffered by the Republicans and a loss of manpower and weaponry that would severely hamper Republican forces for the rest of the revolution, the battle and defence mounted by the Indonesians galvanised the nation in support of independence and helped garner international attention. For the Dutch, it removed any doubt that the Republic was not simply a gang of collaborators without popular support. It also had the effect of convincing Britain that wisdom lay on the side of neutrality in the revolution;[2] within a few years, in fact, Britain would support the Republican cause in the United Nations.

Upon arrival we're served a complimentary bread for each person. The bread is quite nice, and usually heated before served, which is a nice touch.
Indigo Majapahit Hotel, Surabaya |
The place is quite cozy, with a plush sofa for comfort and a round table for those who come with a large company.
The art deco design is still maintained throughout this restaurant, with a lovely fresco of cloud and sky decorating the ceiling.
Though I like this place, there's an even better one in the same hotel, Maj Pub & Dine : http://www.foodgrapher.com/2012/07/the-maj-majapahit-hotel-surabaya.html
Farfalle @ Indigo Majapahit Hotel |
The Italian dish are my favorite, this Farfalle is made using a few selection of cheese, but the herbs and seasonings used are just right, making it taste just delicious.
Soto Ayam |
The Indonesian food served here are a case of hit and miss. Their grilled chicken (betutu style if I remember correctly) was quite nice, but this Soto, was just a plain unappetizing dish. You'd be better off checking the more established Soto vendor such as Soto Ambengan pak Sadi etc.
Vietnam Curry - Vegetarian (Rp 45.000) |
Dijual Rp 10.000 saja saya bakal malas pesan
This Vietnam Curry dish is a big dissapointment, it's just a pile of vegetable with a drizzle of curry with rice. It was a torture trying to finish the dry tasteless food, not to mention there are only four varieties of vegetable, which is carrot, peas, cauliflower and potato.
I recommend you to just stay away from this one, I wont even order it if they charge Rp 10.000 for it.
Sandwich @ Indigo Majapahit Hotel |

The two dishes above are nothing special, the sandwich isn't bad, but it doesn't take much to make a good sandwich.

T-Bone Steak @ Indigo Majapahit Hotel, Surabaya (Rp 125.000) |
The main attraction that keeps me coming back to Indigo is the western menu. Their pizza is quite good, with only a few to be considered on par. For my taste, this place is better than la Rucola, as good as Casa Fontana, and the place that bested this pizza is Cascades in Bumi Hotel, circa 2011. Too bad it's quite a while since I last checked the pizza at Cascades, since I got addicted to Kizahashi, so I don't know if the pizza in Cascades is still good or not.
