Depot 539 - depan supermarket Bonet

Depot 539 ini sudah cukup lama buka di daerah dekat supermarket Bonet, semenjak saya ingat, sudah ada beberapa dasawarsa usianya. Sebelumnya sudah pernah mencoba makan di sini, tapi pada saat jaman masih kuliah dan belum blogging, ditambah lagi sudah lupa bagaimana kesannya saat itu hehe, jadi anggap saja ini kali pertama nyoba tempat ini.

When you see the word depot in Indonesia, it's usually describing a very different thing than the American / English counterpart. Depot here means a small diner, usually open air area, without air conditioning and catering to lower middle class clientele. Though a bit spartan, the food is by no mean bad, it's usually have decent selections of traditional cuisine, such as this place which specialize in Chinese & Indonesian dishes

Depot / Diner ambiance

Berhubung depot, walau lokasinya strategis, tempatnya tetap sederhana, dengan meja kayu dan kursi tanpa sandaran. Beberapa pilihan krupuk tertata di atas meja, suasana khas depot langsung terasa.

Being Diner, though it's located in the plush area, the eatery itself is quite simple. With rows of wooden table and chair. Some crackers are placed on top of the table, a typical diner snack.

Bakmoy

Bakmoy adalah salah satu hidangan Jawa Tengah yang cukup populer di kota sebelah, Malang. Untuk di Surabaya sendiri lebih sulit ditemui, walau tetap ada di beberapa restoran dan depot, di sini salah satunya yang menyajikan hidangan Bakmoy ini. Rasanya cukup enak, tapi berhubung tidak banyak pembanding, jadinya tidak bisa menilai dengan pasti.

Bakmoy: small cubes of fried tofu, chicken and boiled egg served with chicken broth & relish made from sweet soy sauce

This dish is a staple of Center Javanese cuisine, it's also very popular in the neighboring city, Malang. Though not as common in Surabaya, there are restaurants and diner that serves them. This dish tastes quite nice, might be a bit bland for Surabaya's spicy taste, but still good.

Pangsit Ayam / Wonton and chicken Noodle

Pangsit Ayam yang salah satu menu wajib depot cina juga ada di sini, rasanya cukup enak dan tidak eneg. Mienya juga lumayan enak, rasanya tidak terlalu membosankan sepertii mie ayam yang dijajakan di kaki lima.

Here's another common Diner/ Depot food, wonton noodle, a typically common dish along Chinese Diner, quite delicious. Some lesser variant are also sold on the street, usually without the wonton, just chicken and noodle.

Tahu Pong

Salah satu yang kuran saya rekomendasikan di sini adalah Tahu Pongnya, rasanya sih tidak terlalu buruk, tapi minyaknya terlalu banyak, saat digigit meluber minyak goreng di dalam mulut.

The only one that I don't recommend here is the Pong Tofu, the taste is quite ok, but the oil used is overwhelming, when you bite it the oil just flows in your mouth.
