Bakwan Juen - Pasar Atum Surabaya
For the Cwi Mie Lover
Cwi Mie Tite - Bakwan Juen |
I usually tries to weasel my way out of going to this mall. Time to time there's always invites to go here, either from relative, friend or spouse. The reason why can be read bellow.
This time though, I was not as reluctant, since I found a nice place which serves good Cwi Mie.
Why Going Here Sucks...
Pasar Atum - Fallout Mall |

If you've ever played Fallout games, which are available on PC and console, you'd be reminiscent of the game when seeing the state of this mall.
Piles of junk and debris litter the entrance to the mall from the parking lot. It's just plain nasty and unhygienic.

A bit ironic that the mall is named Atom Mall, while fallout depicts post apocalyptic USA, destroyed by Atom Bomb.

Despite the decrepit state of the mall, it's still popular. The clientele are mostly ladies, where they can browse for the boutique and non-bigbranded fashion items, and then dine at the eateries around. Food stalls here are a bit cramped, so if you really like a good ambiance, you'd be better off going to other malls such as Tunjungan Plasa or Galaxy Mall.

Bakwan Juen Surabaya |
Though the name is Bakwan, the dishes weren't all about Bakwan and Shu Mai, there's also Cwi Mie, Mie Tite and Yong To Fu, also plenty of other selections.
The Bakwan or meatball is quite nice, reminds me of bakwan Koko near Petra University. I still like the Bakwan Koko versions of Bakwan and Shumai, but bakwan Juen isn't bad either.
Bakwan Juen Siomay / Shu Mai (Rp 6.000) |
Shu mai and the Bakwan taste nice, but our own fave dish were the noodles, specially the Cwi Mie Noodle. Cwi Mie itself is similar to wonton noodles you'd see in plenty of Chinese eatery.
The other noodle dish we tried were the Mie Tite, which uses pig feet.
Shumai (simplified Chinese: 烧卖; traditional Chinese: 燒賣; pinyin: shāomài), also romanized as siu mai or shaomai, also called pork dumplings (although often other types of dumplings could also be filled with pork), is a type of traditional Chinese dumplingserved as dim sum.
