The Calendar Hostel - Otsu, Kyoto Japan
Cheap Hostel and Great Breakfast in Kyoto
Calendar Hostel |
Few months ago I mistakenly booked a hostel in Otsu, whilst originally wanting to stay in Kyoto, thanks to Agoda falsely lumping Otsu as a part of Kyoto, which it isn't.
I was choosing this hostel since it have better feel and modern aesthetics, as well as gorgeous looking breakfast.
Otsu
Otsu is a small town next to Kyoto, it's somewhat feel
like a small village in some areas, with a cool breeze and much less pollution
typical of highlands.
For us, we enjoy Otsu more than Kyoto, even though
Kyoto have many more tourist attractions, we are drawn to this city due to the
cooler weather and the rural beauty.
We ended up spending just 1 day in Kyoto and 2 days in
Otsu.

Hostel Area
Hostel on 2nd Floor of JR Station |
kaki.
This hostel is really suitable for those wanting to
venture to Kyoto, since it's just next to the JR station, which is the main
connection between Otsu and Kyoto city, for just a 190 yen train ride.
The problem is when you need to use a Daypass in Otsu, which is what I recommend you do.

Otsu Subway station is about 10 minutes walk away from this Hostel / JR Station, which will be a mild inconvenience if you really hate long walks.
For us it didn't matter much, since the tourists
attraction usually requires loads of walking anyway.

This video above does a better job at portraying the hostel
area and room. You can see that the hostel is really inside the JR station.
Despite being literately next to a train platform (see the photo below) we weren't disturbed by loud train noises at all.
For those wanting to venture to Kyoto, after arriving at Kyoto stasion, I would recommend you to get the Kyoto Bus Pass. It costs only 600 yen, which gives you unlimited bus ride for a day, which is less than 3 regular bus ride worth (210 yen for a ride)

Calendar Cafe - Breakfast Area
There's a table tennis in this hostel, located in
their Cafe. Most likely you'd need to be a guest at the cafe to play, or use it
outside their operational hours.
